Below is a list of dates and notes for each of our classes. Note that the details are subject to change.

WEEK 1, August 28
Refresher on Gestalt principles of visual organization

Gestalt principles of perception of spatial organization.

Type, Space and Meaning

Work on Space and Meaning composition exercise for review in next class.

Begin letter form study and type analysis project, bring one type specimen page in for review in next class.

Creation of visual archive. Find on the streets of NYC and document photographically 6 examples of gestalt principles at work, print and caption with a relevant Gestalt principle.

WEEK 2, September 4 Introduction to typography

Typographic anatomy.
Typeface analysis and documentation.

Letter-form explorations, using research based on NYC.

Dissect, study and document 5 different typefaces. Thinking with Type, Part 2.

Typographic anatomy, part 2. Refine letter-form explorations.

Explorations in letter-spacing, leading, weight and typographic texture using research based on life in NYC for review in next class.

Create a value scale using found paragraphs of type. Scale must have at least 7 levels of value.

WEEK 4: September 18 Typography, continued

Lecture:

Principles of typography: names and logo-types.
Word exercises using NYC as a creative muse.
Refine and complete both the word and texture exercises for review. Find and document 5-8 examples of logos as unique letter-forms. Thinking with Type, Part 3.

Review word and texture.
Work on planning type specimen booklet.

WEEK 6: October 2

Information Hierarchies
Lecture: Using Grid systems and information hierarchies.

Class Activity: Explore information hierarchies within a grid structure; use the visual language of NYC as a creative muse.

Assignment: Refine information hierarchies for review in next class.

Journal: Find and document 5+ examples of graphic communication that use effective grid systems AND easy to identify information hierarchies.

WEEK 10: October 30
Signs and Symbols: Abstraction, Reduction, and Simplification

Lecture:
Class Activity:

Introduction to semiotic forms (icons, symbols and indexes). Critique of hierarchy assignment.
Translate three designed objects into icons and/or symbols that

share a common design language and work as a series/system, use your NYC visual research to inform your design. Refine icons/symbols for review in next class.

Journal: Find and document 6+ examples of icons and symbols in graphic communication. Note location found and context of use (try to determine

if audience is a factor in whether the form is iconic or symbolic.) At least two must be indexical signs.

WEEK 11: November 6

Review and refine icons/symbols.
Complete icons/symbols for review in next class. Design Intervention Concepts

WEEK 12: November 13 Poster Design / Project 2

Project 2:

The poster as the quintessential communication tool.

Review final Icons and discuss final project, use and expand upon your design archive based on your
research in NYC to inform your visual language.

Thumbnail sketches of poster concepts.
